Overview
Petalite has a very low coefficient of thermal expansion and is a key raw material for low-expansion glass, heat-resistant ceramics and glass-ceramics. Compared with spodumene, it is introduced more smoothly into glazes and glass melts, and iron content can be held below 0.15%.
- Fe₂O₃ ≤ 0.15%
- Low thermal expansion coefficient
- Suited to glass, ceramics and glass-ceramics
Technical data
| Item | Ceramic grade | Standard grade |
|---|---|---|
| Li₂O / % | 4.2–4.6 | 4.0–4.4 |
| Fe₂O₃ / % max | 0.15 | 0.30 |
| Al₂O₃ / % | 16–18 | 16–18 |
| SiO₂ / % | 76–79 | 75–79 |
| K₂O + Na₂O / % max | 1.0 | 1.5 |
| Moisture / % max | 0.5 | 1.0 |
| Particle size | 0.1–1 mm | 0.1–3 mm |
Ceramic grades carry tighter limits on coloring impurities such as iron and titanium; particle size can be tailored to the glaze system.
