Overview
Lithium clay occurs in sedimentary basins, typically hosted by hectorite and illite. Grades are low, but tonnages are large and stripping ratios are low, making it suitable for on-site conversion by acid or salt leaching; it has become an important resource type for projects in North and South America.
- Li₂O 0.3–1.0%
- Low stripping ratio, scalable
- Mg/Al/Fe acid consumption must be assessed
Technical data
| Item | Typical value |
|---|---|
| Li₂O / % | 0.3–1.0 |
| MgO / % | 8–18 |
| Al₂O₃ / % | 12–18 |
| Fe₂O₃ / % | 4–8 |
| SiO₂ / % | 45–60 |
| Moisture / % max | 8 |
| Particle size | ≤2 mm |
Clay-type resources are highly process-sensitive; leaching recovery and acid consumption tests should precede process design.
